Browning Fire Determined To Be Arson, Suspect In Custody

ELVERTA (CBS13) - Firefighters are working to contain a 200-acre fire that is being fed by erratic winds in the Elverta area.

The wind-driven fire, also known as the Browning Fire, continues to grow in the area of Browning Street and Locust Road. Firefighters have not gained any containment on the fire and say they expect to be battling the fire for several hours, according to a statement from the Sacramento Metro Fire Department.

Fire investigators say the fire is determined to be arson. One suspect is custody, charged with multiple counts of arson.

Additional fire engines and air tankers have been requested.

Dozens of firefighting crews from multiple agencies are on the scene and air units have made retardant drops on the fire.

Fire officials say multiple structures are being threatened.

Placer County Sheriff's Department deputies are carrying out the evacuations.  Evacuation centers are open at Placer County Fairgrounds (people and animals welcome) and Elverta Junior High (people only).
