State's Drought Conservation Plan To Be Revised Today

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - California regulators are revising the state's plan for saving water with mandatory water-use reduction targets across the state.

The State Water Resources Control Board is scheduled on Tuesday to update its drought conservation plan, which has been under fire from some local water departments. The plan is the agency's response to Gov. Jerry Brown's order this month to cut statewide water use by 25 percent.

The board's current proposal calls for consumption to plummet by as much as 36 percent in some communities, compared with 2013. Some cities and agencies say the savings targets are unrealistic and possibly illegal under longstanding water laws.

Board chairwoman Felicia Marcus said Monday that steep conservation is needed in case California is in the middle of a long-term mega drought.
