Small Plane Makes Emergency Landing, Catches Fire On Highway 99 South Of Crows Landing
MODESTO (CBS13) — A small plane made an emergency landing on southbound Highway 99 south of the Crows Landing exit, according to Modesto police.
Police said only the pilot, a 59-year-old man from Santa Cruz, was on board at the time. The pilot was able to walk away from the incident with very minor injuries.
The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department said the plane, a single-engine Piper Dakota, caught fire and burned up after landing.
According to the FAA, the pilot reported a "rough running engine" and attempted to divert to Modesto.
No other injuries have been reported, additionally, no vehicles on the road were affected.
Caltrans said all southbound lanes of the highway are blocked due to the incident. There is no estimated time of reopening.
Caltrans opened the far-left lane around 10:30 p.m. and traffic began to slowly trickle through.
The crash happened just before 8 p.m. Friday.
The CHP is investigating the incident. The FAA and the NTSB will also investigate the crash.
