Winter Storm Expected To Dump Snow On Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Brace yourself for a cold and snowy Sunday.

Saturday was mostly uneventful, even with a little sunshine in spots. But that was the calm before the storm because KDKA's Jon Burnett says the next round of winter weather moves in early Sunday.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Allegheny, Somerset and Washington counties. It begins at 4 a.m. Sunday and runs through noon on Monday. Check for the latest weather advisories here.

A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for several surrounding areas - Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Cambria, Clarion, Crawford, Indiana, Jefferson, Lawrence, Mercer and Venango counties.

Brooke, Hancock and Ohio counties in West Virginia are also under a Winter Weather Advisory.

Burnett says the system will begin moving in very early Sunday morning.

"There will be a mixed bag of precipitation moving in early [Sunday] morning. North of I-80, it's going to be all snow. From I-70 south, it's mostly going to be a mixed bag and the line will fluctuate as the day goes on," he said.

Forecasters say the period of most intense snow is expected from Sunday afternoon into the night. Then, Sunday night, the snow may mix with freezing rain and sleet.

"So it looks like most of us will see something on the order of two to four inches of snowfall during the day [Sunday]. More than that north; but south, maybe a little less," said Burnett. "That will be the general average, two to four during the day [Sunday], and another inch or two, again now, it does appear on Monday."

But exactly how much you see depends on where you are.

"Those totals go up fairly dramatically when you get up to I-80, north to the lake, where they could see as much as eight to 10, maybe 12 inches in one or two spots; I think that's a little generous," Burnett says. "Meanwhile, for the rest of us, we're looking at three to five, maybe six inches, unless you get into Washington and Greene counties, down toward Wheeling, and there you're only looking at one to three."

Officials are also advising people to be careful on the roads as hazardous travel conditions are expected through the storm.
