Large Water Main Break Causes Problems In West Homestead

WEST HOMESTEAD (KDKA) – A large water main break affected several homes in West Homestead Tuesday morning.
According to emergency dispatchers, the break happened around 4:30 a.m. on Pinewood Drive.
As of 8 a.m., water was still rushing down the road.
The water tore a hole in one person's front yard and then rushed down the street, flooding several homes.
Neighbors and West Homestead officials are questioning why it took several hours for Pennsylvania American Water Company to finally arrive and turn off the water.
"They were called at 4:20, they showed up at 8:15. There's no excuse for that as far as we're concerned, or the residents," West Homestead Fire Chief John Dindak said. "I just feel, hey I don't work there, I know this, nobody here that has jobs can delay four hours to be on scene. I realize things break and that's what the neighbors are upset about. I understand you can't send a crew out to dig, but send somebody out with the water keys to shut the system down to prevent the damage."
"It was just a disaster, water all in my basement. My whole yard is a complete swamp," Rachel Nelson said.
At least three homes were flooded. Several other homes suffered damage to their yards and driveways.
No other information has been released at this time.
