CHAMPION, Pa. (KDKA) - A 96-year-old man died after his Fayette County home caught fire Sunday morning.

It happened at a home on Stanton Road near Nebo Road in Champion, Pa., around 6:30 a.m.

At least four fire companies responded to battle the blaze.

According to Saltlick Township Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Jerry Gales, an elderly man -- later identified as 96-year-old Clare Geary -- was airlifted to UPMC Mercy with second-degree burns and some third-degree burns.

"Fayette 911 did tell us that there was a burn patient involved in this fire and the house itself is still standing, it was pretty much contained to one room," Gales said.

The Allegheny County medical examiner's office says Geary died at the hospital just before 1 p.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
