More Changes On Route 28 Take Effect, End Of Project In Sight

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - The end is near for the construction project on Route 28, but not before drivers have to deal with a few more changes.

Two ramps reopened today after being closed for almost a year and a vital ramp from Downtown was closed.

The ramps from East Ohio Street and Heinz Street to northbound Route 28 reopened to traffic this morning.

"They've actually been dealing with those ramp closures since December of last year. So, this is going to make it much easier for individuals coming on East Ohio Street to hit Route 28," PennDOT's Steve Cowan said.

After crews took down the signs and reopened those ramps, they shut down another, which now leaves drivers with yet another detour to learn.

The northbound Interstate 579 Crosstown Boulevard ramp from the Veteran's Bridge to outbound Route 28 closed.

The closure will be around-the-clock through late-November.

Here's the posted detour:

Continue northbound on Crosstown Boulevard to the Parkway North.

Take the Hazlett Street exit and turn right onto East Street.

Follow East Street and then turn left onto East Ohio Street.

From there, you'll be able to jump on Route 28.

"Give yourself some extra time, know your detour route. There will be police stationed for the next few nights along the detour route to help motorists get back to Route 28," Cowan said.

The good news to keep in mind with this latest detour is it will be the last one.

The entire Route 28 project is expected to wrap up before Thanksgiving.
