Man Flees Robbery Across Iced-Over Allegheny River

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A man possibly involved with a robbery downtown ran across the icy Allegheny River to escape police.

Police say it happened shortly after midnight Sunday at the News and Numbers convenience store by the 9th and Penn parking garage.

Police say 25-year-old and two others claimed they needed help with their aunt who was in a car. However, someone in the store was suspicious and saw McManus crawling through a broken window and allegedly stuffing scratch off tickets in his coat.

The two others took off on foot, but police say McManus took off toward the river walk and eventually ran across the ice-covered Allegheny River into Zone 1.

He was then arrested.
