Jared Hughes Talks About Learning To Channel His Anger

BRADENTON (93-7 The Fan) – Pirates pitcher Jared Hughes sat down with The Fan Morning Show at Pirates spring training on Wednesday to chat about his offseason and the team's preparation for the 2014 season.

Here is some of what he had to say:

On how he's learned to channel his emotions on the field:
"Growing up, I was one of those kids that got super-frustrated whenever I failed. I would just start stomping my feet. I'd get so angry, and I just let the anger take over, and I'd all of a sudden be a terrible player because I couldn't handle my emotions. I got to the point in my life where I just figured that, hey, if I can find a way to channel this, and channel it into focus, that things are going to be a lot better, because I'll get angry, and then all of a sudden I'll be extra focused, and next time, I'll do it right."

On what makes pitching coach Ray Searage successful:
"He's the best communicator I've ever dealt with, in terms of a pitching coach. It's just, everything that he thinks, he tells you. He's super-honest."

On whether or not Searage ever gets mad or raises his voice:
"Not very often, but when he does, everybody just gets quiet and listens, because it's like, whoa, Ray's mad, something must really be wrong if Ray's mad, so let's listen to hear what it is. The answer is yes, definitely. He gets mad, and when he does, we all listen."

On his feelings about Reds 2B Brandon Phillips after Phillips accused him of making racist comments in 2012:
"As long as he's on the other team, I'm not going to like him, but it's in the past now."
