71-Year-Old Summit Twp. Man Shot After Firing At Police

SUMMIT TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- A 71-year-old man was shot after he opened fire on police officers an Erie County residence early Sunday morning.

State police responded to a domestic dispute at a residence along Dorn Road in Summit Township around 1 a.m. Officers were told the 71-year-old suspect was armed and firing an assault rifle.

When they arrived on the scene, officers gave verbal commands to the suspect to drop the weapon.

Police say the suspect refused and began firing the rifle at officers. The officers returned fire, striking the suspect.

The suspect was transported to Hamot Hospital and is in critical condition. He has not been identified.

The investigation is ongoing.
