Pa. Governor's Race Heats Up During Weekend Campaigning In Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- It is the next to the last weekend of campaigning for the two men who want to live in the governor's mansion in Harrisburg.

Both candidates are in western Pennsylvania this weekend, a region that often decides the outcome of statewide elections.

Gov. Tom Corbett was at a home in Cranberry Township, a heavily Republican area. He was blasting opponent Tom Wolf as a guy who will raise your taxes.

"It's going to be you that gets taxed more," he said. "It's not going to be all companies. It is everybody who's going to have to take this, because he wants to increase this by $6 billion."

In Leechburg, Democrat Tom Wolf questioned Corbett's leadership and challenged his vision.

"Continuing down the road we've been going down with hollowed out schools, an economy that's not working, a Commonwealth gone broke; or a vision of a Pennsylvania that actually has a bright future," said Wolf.

But Corbett is defending his leadership, saying his policies are best for the future.

"The potential of Pennsylvania is great as long as we keep our spending under control and our taxes under control," said Corbett.

At one point, Wolf held a 20 point lead over incumbent Corbett in most polls. But the lead is slipping, down now to single digits in some polls.

The challenge for Wolf is to get his voters to the polls.

"It's one thing to be sitting in your easy chair and take a call from a polling organization and give an answer," Wolf said. "It's quite another to get out of that chair, go down to the polling place and cast your ballot on Nov. 4."

Meanwhile, some big guns are coming out to help Wolf campaign. President Obama will be in Philadelphia next Sunday, and former President Bill Clinton will be in Pittsburgh on Monday.
