Weekend Box Office Report: 'Jurassic World' Takes Big Bite Out Of Competition

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- To no one's surprise, Jurassic World – the third sequel to Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park – took the box office crown on its weekend debut. But to considerable surprise, it also eclipsed the $200-million mark.
The dinosaur fantasy follow-up earned an estimated $205-million on its opening weekend, the second biggest domestic opening ever, behind only that of The Avengers' $207-million in 2012.
Second place went to the holdover Melissa McCarthy comedy, Spy, which took in another $16-million.
Third belonged to the holdover disaster thriller, San Andreas. It totaled $11-million.
And rounding out the top five were the sequels Insidious: Chapter 3 and Pitch Perfect 2 with $7-million and $6-million, respectively.
Overall, industry-wide totals left last year's totals in the dust, mostly because of Jurassic World, which alone surpassed the combined takes of all the movies released on the same weekend last year.
