Weekend Box Office Report: A Modest Win For 'Nightcrawler'

By Bill Wine

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Predictably, moviegoing dropped off for Halloween weekend.

Only two movies were able to top the modest $10-million mark – and barely at that.

In a nose-to-nose finish, Nightcrawler, the thriller with Jake Gyllenhaal, eked out a first-place finish over the horror thriller, Ouija, which was last weekend's leader.

Each totaled just under $11-million.

Fury, the holdover World war II drama with Brad Pitt, was third with $9-million.

Rounding out the top five were holdovers Gone Girl and The Book of Life with just under $9-million and just over $8–million, respectively.

Overall, industry-wide totals were considerably below those of a year ago, no surprise with Halloween trick-or-treating falling on a Friday night.
