Thousands Of Toys For Kids In Need As CBS3 Closes Out Joy Of Sharing Campaign

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- CBS3 is closing out its 27th annual Joy of Sharing Campaign to benefit local children on behalf of the Salvation Army.

Over the past several weeks, CBS3 led the charge to collect thousands of new, unwrapped toys for Philadelphia area children.

"I haven't seen anything like it anywhere that I have been where people are just coming out of the wood work."

Major Philip Ferriera is director of the Salvation Army in Philadelphia. He says parents who have hit hard times, some who are in area shelters, registered with their local Salvation Army community center and will come back over the next few days to choose toys to give to their children.

"Sometimes they've made request for particular gifts and they just can't believe that they are getting what they want-- it warms my heart that we've been able to do something that makes their lives just a little bit better."

Ferrria predicts they'll give away 20,000 toys this season. And it's not too late to donate- you can drop off toys here at the CBS Broadcast Center today until 8 p.m. or at the Salvation Army until Wednesday.

You can also donate by texting JOY to 41444.
