The 5 Best Steps To Prevent Heart Disease

By Dr. Brian McDonough

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- There are many topics that doctors debate in medicine, and many different studies can have all sorts of implications. However, certain things remain consistent.

There is yet another study, looking at Swedish men, in this case, that talks about how to prevent heart attacks 4 out of 5 times.

According to a study which followed over 20,000 men in Sweden for 11 years, five factors had the greatest impact on health: diet, exercise, smoking, weight circumference, and alcohol consumption.

The bottom line is, yes, you can drink an occasional glass of alcohol, though you shouldn't smoke and you should maintain a healthy diet. You should also emphasize whole grains in your diet.

Finally, get that exercise. You can walk or cycle 40 minutes a day, or you can exercise more vigorously at least one hour per week. Do these things, it will make a difference, and it will increase your lifespan.
