TD Bank Pulling Plug On Coin-Counting Machines For Customers
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It's a big change in the way TD Bank counts change. The bank says it is pulling the plug on its coin-counting machines for customers.
The Penny Arcade coin-counting machines are being permanently pulled from TD Bank branches. The bank last month suspended its consumer coin-counters after media reports indicated the machines weren't always accurate, often erring in the bank's favor. Now, the bank says Penny is not coming back. That's a disappointment to customers who used the machines.
"It was a benefit, I thought, to customers," said Tom from Maple Shade. "There's no payment for the service and you get your money. And if you have an account, they just put it in your account."
But Tom says he always thought he was getting an accurate count.
"Yeah, I thought I was. I never really checked it that close," he said. "I guess I'll be counting 'em by hand!"
James from West Deptford says he never used the machines. But he says people who bring bags and jars of coins to the bank deserve a proper count.
"I think it's kind of bad. People save that change and they need it," he said. "And if you're really counting your change, you want what's in that jar."
TD Bank says usage of the coin-counting machines has been declining. An attorney has filed a federal suit against the bank, alleging it has undercounted change for years.
