Suspect Wanted In Murder Of Delaware County Man Captured In Georgia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A North Carolina man wanted in connection with a murder in Delaware County has been arrested in Georgia.

Thirty-seven-year-old Rodney Shelton was caught Friday afternoon in Decatur.

He is charged with murder in the fatal shooting of 63-year-old Thomas Childs during a robbery in Yeadon in June 2015.

Authorities say Childs was reporting for work as a delivery man when he was killed.

"He was at his truck when he was approached by Mr. Shelton," said Delaware County District Attorney Jack Whelan. "For a few dollars, he brutally and callously murdered Mr. Childs."

Whelan says U.S. Marshals tracked Shelton down south based on a tip. He was found at his girlfriend's apartment. Police say he tried to escape but was quickly taken into custody by local authorities.

"He initially tried to run out the back door but we had officers back there," said Inspector Frank Lempka with the U.S. Marshals, "and then he decided to give up and come to the front door."

Shelton is now in Georgia jail cell, as officials try to bring him back to Pennsylvania to face first and second degree murder charges.
