PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – We talk about the importance of having a strong self image, but few are aware that self image can have a big impact on overall health.

Studies have repeatedly shown that if you have a poor body image, you tend to be at an increased risk to suffer from problems like depression and anxiety.  It can even increase your risk of heart problems due to feelings of increased stress over time.

The biggest impact of a poor self-image is the fact that you are less likely to take steps to improve yourself.  This can lead to poor diet choices and a lack of exercise.  These lifestyle changes can actually have the greatest effect.

The remaining issue is the feeling that there is a cycle that can't be broken. Feelings of poor image lead to poor choices, and even to a worse self-image. My feeling here is what you need to do is constantly work on that self-image, build your confidence, and do what you can to feel stronger. Clearly, self image is not the only factor or even major factor in evaluating overall health but it is something that is clearly associated with a positive approach to life and we know this has a major impact on longevity.
