Rittenhouse Billy Goat Statue Could Be On Move
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A planned hearing by the Philadelphia Art Commission on the fate a beloved life-sized goat statue in Rittenhouse Square was withdrawn Wednesday.
The Billy Goat bronze statue was placed in Rittenhouse Square in 1919.
Over the years the sculpture has been climbed on, touched and exposed to the elements. And, according to the city's public art director, the metal is worn in spots and it's integrity is a concern.
Julie Krug of Center City has been bringing her kids there for years.
"There are sharp parts to it, but kids have managed to be fine," Krug said.
A plan is in the works to relocate the statue to inside the library across the street.
The possible project includes making a mold from a replica goat statue in Camden that is in better shape and make another Billy for Rittenhouse Square.
A decision on the proposal was expected by the Philadelphia Art Commission on Wednesday, but that review was put on hold to allow for additional time for conversations with community groups.
