Ed Rendell: Hillary Clinton's Support, If Not Enthusiastic, Is More Widespread

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Ed Rendell addressed the fact that Hillary Clinton seems to be faltering in the presidential race as Donald Trump has cut into her polling lead and Bernie Sanders shows no signs of dropping out of the race for the Democratic nomination.

Rendell told Rich Zeoli on Talk Radio 1210 to discount the polling numbers this far out, as there is such a long way to go before the finish line.

"Polls for a November election in May mean absolutely nothing...I'm telling Clinton supporters, don't get in an uproar. Be calm. There's a long way to go and no one's really focused on this yet. Let's see what happens in the fall campaign."

Regarding the vigorous and fanatical support Bernie Sanders receives where ever he goes, the former Pennsylvania Governor said Clinton's support is more widespread and Democrats will unite when confronted with the possibility of seeing Donald Trump in the White House.

"Is there enthusiasm for Hillary Clinton? There is some. There's no question about that. Is it widespread like Bernie Sanders or as vocal as Bernie Sanders? No. But remember, Bernie Sanders, in New York, had all these incredible rallies...and Hillary Clinton won the New York Primary by 16 points. You can't always go by enthusiasm, by turnout at rallies. There's a long way to go and I think most Democrats will be motivated to go to the polls more by mistrust of Donald Trump than even enthusiasm for Hillary Clinton. I think that's what's going to generate and motivate Democrats to go to the polls."

Rendell expressed confidence that by the time November gets here, Clinton will have more than enough support to win the Presidency.

"She doesn't have the same type of enthusiastic supporters as Mr. Trump or Mr. Sanders, but she may have more supporters and the last time I checked, a moderately enthusiastic vote counts the same as a wildly enthusiastic vote."
