Popular Local Restaurants Are Under Review... For Accessibility

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Accessibility on the menu.

The U.S. Attorney in Philadelphia has targeted 25 of Philadelphia's most popular restaurants for review of their compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The review starts with a survey form to be completed by the restaurants.

U.S. Attorney Zane Memeger says the restaurant list is not based on any specific complaints. The 25 restaurants were chosen because they are among the most popular and the government has a congressionally-mandated responsibility to ensure compliance with the ADA.

Memeger says it may turn out the restaurants are already in compliance, but if not, they'll be given a chance to comply voluntarily.

"Ultimately, if they are in compliance, it is great for the overall industry because it makes it more attractive to everyone and that is a good thing. Philadelphia is a very vibrant thing, especially in the nightlife."

But if there is push-back from any of the restaurants, Memeger says have the authority to file a civil complaint and seek damages and compliance with the law.
