Poll: Universities Should Do More To Help Students Attain Career Goals

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A new poll of college students and recent graduates indicates schools need to do more to tie academic learning with practical work.

Darryl Greer, author of the Stockton University study, looked at students college experiences to find out what they felt would be the most valuable experience to help student reach their goals.

"What we found," he says, "is that overwhelmingly, the number one reasons for going to college is to get a good job and to start a career."

He says researchers found about 30-percent of students worked jobs unrelated to their studies:

"Students are saying to the colleges, 'I'm already working, give me quality academic experiences'."

And while over 90-percent of students were aware that their schools offered academic advising services, "only about 20-percent use any particular type of career counseling service," says Greer, "and no more than 50-percent use any type of academic advising."
