Poll: Managers Are Feeling Disengaged At Work, Too

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – If you feel like your boss has checked out, you might be right.

A new Gallup survey reveals 51% of managers are not engaged and 14% are actively disengaged.

So, why does this matter?

Gallup boils it down to something called "the cascade effect." In other words, if a manager is disengaged, that trickles down to the employees beneath him or her.

In fact, Gallup estimates the group that's not engaged in their work or company "costs the U.S. $77 billion to $96 billion annually through their impact on those they manage." Employees under a boss who's "highly engaged" are 59% more likely to be engaged than those who work for someone who's disinterested.

According to Gallup, just 30% of employees are engaged in their work. The organization recommends companies do three things to try and reverse that: clearly and consistently communicate where the company has been and where it's going, make learning and development a priority and emphasize managers' strengths.
