Police Warn Of Scam In Bucks County With Callers Claiming To Be With PECO
NEWTOWN Twp., Pa. (CBS) -- Scammers have been calling up PECO customers in a Bucks County town and police say if you get a similar call you should hang up.
These scam calls have been going around for years, says PECO spokesman Ben Armstrong and at times, customers lose a lot of cash.
"Anywhere from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars."
And in the last few weeks, at least two residents in Newtown Township, Bucks County, have gotten these calls from people who claim they're with PECO.
"Scammers will contact our customers and tell them they are behind on their bill and they have to make a payment, usually within less than an hour."
...Or the power is shut off.
And the one way to pay, per the con artist, is through a prepaid debit or credit card. But that's not how it really works, Armstrong says.
"If you're a PECO customer and you are behind on your bill or have a past due balance you will receive multiple shutoff notifications."
PECO says call them directly if you get one of these calls.
