Police Deliver Holiday Meals To Families In Camden

By Pat Loeb

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- There have been a lot of changes in Camden's police department but the Hispanic Officer Society is carrying on a tradition it started 15 years ago: delivering Christmas dinner to needy Camden families.

Officers raised money, shopped at Camden's new supermarket, then spent the morning putting together packages of the traditional ingredients and dividing them up for delivery. Sergeant Gabriel Olmo is the driving force.

"I'm also a native of Camden and I know what it was like to be hungry, not have any food growing up and it's a joy looking at all these families when they see this basket come to them," Sergeant Olmo.

Officer Mike Steiger and Officer Cody Smith helped deliver dinner packages in the city's Fairview section.

(Resident:) "Thank you."

(Officer:) "You're very welcome. You guys have a good holiday all right?"

(Resident:) "You too, have a blessed one."

(Officer:) "Thank you."

(Reporter:) "How'd that feel?"

"It's good because we work in this area. We see them every day at their worst, when they call us but being able to give back to them during this time is really nice and I feel like it's going to form more of a bond with the community and that's what we're here for."
