Police: Boy Riding Mini Bike With Mom's Boyfriend Struck, Killed By Suspected DUI Driver
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A child is dead and a man is fighting for his life after an SUV crashed into their mini bike in West Philadelphia.
It happened just after 11 p.m. Sunday at 63rd and Callowhill Streets.
Police say the 24-year-old man and a 6-year-old boy were joyriding on their mini bike when an SUV slammed into them.
The child, who police identified as Malik Williams, 6, died at the hospital. The man riding with the child was hospitalized with head, hip and leg injuries and had to have one leg partially amputated.
Police say the man is the boy's mother's boyfriend.
"The 6-year-old child and 24-year-old father weren't wearing any helmets, so there is a very good chance that the 24-year-old father, if he survives, that he will be charged," said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small.
Police say the mini bike was not registered or street legal.
Officers arrested the SUV driver. Police beleive he was under the influence at the time of the accident and was driving with a suspended license.
Police also say they found alcohol inside of his vehicle.
