Philadelphia Weather: Winter Storm Changes Over To Sleet, Freezing Rain

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- After a widespread 2 to 4 inches of snow fell across the Delaware Valley on Wednesday, the change-over to a wintry mix has commenced with numerous reports of sleet, freezing rain and drizzle. The precipitation intensity will pick back up with a secondary surge of moisture between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.
South Jersey, Philadelphia and immediate Pennsylvania suburbs will be changing to plain rain by and during that timeframe.
Our far western suburbs in Chester, Montgomery, Bucks and Berks Counties, as well as the Lehigh Valley and Poconos, could likely experience a period of heavy freezing rain or sleet this evening into tonight.

What's the difference between freezing rain and sleet?
Sleet looks like pellets whereas freezing rain looks just the same as plain rain, but with temperatures at or below 32 degrees, the rain freezes on contact.
This can create very slick conditions on roads and sidewalks.
A winter weather advisory remains in effect for greater Philadelphia until 9 p.m.
The winter weather advisory in Lehigh Valley and the Poconos is in effect until 6 a.m. Thursday.
