Philadelphia Police Officer Shot In Leg

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia Police say an officer was shot in the leg Sunday night while attempting to stop a car theft.

Officer James McCullough was shot in the left thigh around 9:00 pm Sunday night near the intersection of 59th and Market Streets.

Police say 24-year-old McCullough and his partner were flagged down by woman who said two men were breaking into her car.

As the officers approached the car, the two men fled. McCullough tackled one of the suspects, before the suspect shot him in the leg and continued running.

Police say McCullough fired three times at the fleeing suspects.

After applying his own tourniquet to the wound, Officer McCullough was transported to Penn Presbyterian Hospital. He is in stable condition and expected to survive.

The two suspects were later caught, and are currently in custody.

Officer McCullough is a two-year veteran of the 18th District.
