Philadelphia Attorney Among Newest Customers For New '.LGBT' Internet Domain

HORSHAM, Pa. (CBS) -- A new "top level domain" goes live today with a focus on the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community.
Now, joining .com, .org, .info, and other Internet domains, there's .lgbt.
"It's really for businesses, organizations, and other entities that want to reach out to the LGBT market," says Brett Samuels, who works in Horsham, Pa. for the US division of Afilias, the Irish company which created the .lgbt Internet domain.
He says the extension will create a safe space where those interested in the LGBT community can communicate with one another without discrimination or hate, through community-based policing.
"We have an acceptable-use policy that allows us to take down sites that are defamatory to the community," he says.
Philadelphia-based LGBT civil rights attorney Angela Giampolo was one of the first to register her site -- lawyer.lgbt -- which went live today. She believes the niche extension is the next Internet wave, "like .lawyer, .radio, and eventually even characters that others wouldn't be able to read," she tells KYW Newsradio.
It costs about $59 to register an .lgbt domain for a year. More information is available at get.lgbt.
