Flying tire strikes SUV, causing major traffic backup on Pennsylvania Turnpike

Two people were injured after a tire from a truck came off and struck the windshield of their vehicle, causing a crash and the closure of both the north and southbound lanes of I-476, the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, on Monday.

The accident happened around 1:30 p.m. Monday in Whitpain Township, Montgomery County.

Pennsylvania State Police said two people were injured in the crash, and there were no fatalities. The front passenger was flown to Jefferson Abington Hospital with life-threatening injuries, and another in the back seat was flown to Temple University Hospital with a head injury.

Chopper 3 was live over the highway, showing a heavily damaged dark-colored SUV and a large traffic backup.

The incident caused a large backup on the Northeast Extension on Monday afternoon, but as of Tuesday, all lanes are back open.
