PATCO Takes New Look At Reopening Long-Shuttered Franklin Square Station

By Mike DeNardo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Delaware River Port Authority is once again looking into the possibility of reopening the Franklin Square PATCO station.

The old PATCO stop at 6th and Race Streets has been shuttered since 1979. But with a revitalized Franklin Square now popular, the Delaware River Port Authority is taking a look at putting the PATCO station there back into service. DRPA Chief Engineer Mike Venuto told the board this week that a half-million dollars is being budgeted to explore new life for the station.

"The Franklin Square project is also going to be represented in the 2015 capital plan," Venuto said.

A total price tag to reopen the station is expected later this month, and a ridership study with the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission should be ready in January.
