Parents Forced To Battle Kids' Summer Slide Once School's Out

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- An annual rite of summer is that students lose ground academically. It's called the summer slide and since teachers are off the clock, fighting it falls to parents.
Fighting the summer slide may seem like an odd issue for bargain website retailmenot.com to champion, but its senior lifestyle editor Trae Bodge says it's a personal quest with her.
A RetailMeNot poll finds 82 percent of parents are aware enough of the phenomenon to want to do something about it, generally in three areas.
"The first one being parental involvement, so parents getting involved, having fun with their kids playing educational games, for instance," Bodge says. "The second is more self-education, where kids will be encouraged to read books on their own and the third is the one that I find the most interesting because it's very current to what a lot of us parents experience, and it's screen time learning."
Which may involve getting junior his or her own tablet stocked with educational games.
