Police: 1 Dead In Multi-Vehicle Crash On New Jersey Turnpike In Cranbury Township

CRANBURY, N.J., (CBS) -- New Jersey State Police say one person was killed in a crash that involved 40 vehicles on the New Jersey Turnpike Monday night.

The crash happened at about 9:11 p.m. in the southbound lanes of the Turnpike near mile-marker 71.4 in Cranbury Township, Middlesex County.

According to investigators, 21 vehicles were involved in crashes in the inner lanes of the Turnpike and 19 vehicles were involved in crashes in the outer lanes.

New Jersey State Police said 52-year-old Darryl C. Williams, 52, of Bordentown, was killed in a crash that involved 13 cars in the outer lanes.

Several people were injured in the crashes, but their injuries are not considered life-threatening, police said.

Icy conditions are believed to be a factor in the crashes.

The incident remains under investigation.
