NJ Pastry Shop Offering Scrapple Pies

OCEAN CITY, NJ (CBS) -- In Ocean City, Wards Pastry has a special spin on a local favorite. It's not apple, it's not pumpkin… it's scrapple pie.

Walt Hohman, owner of Wards, takes us through the unique treat.

"We need a little bit of pie dough. Throw it around in some flour, and get it into the shape we need."

"Then we used a custom made cutter," Hohman says laughing.

Next step, scrapple.

"We take a block of scrapple and chop it up with one of our scrapers. We bake it and take a handful and put it in to the shell."

Then top it with streusel crumbs.

Hohman says, "Can't tell you how hot we bake it, we gotta have a few secrets here!"

So where did the idea for scrapple pie come from?

"A couple of years ago a couple of friends of mine were coming up with different ideas, just to create a little buzz and do something different. Bacon had been played out, so we tried to do something different and try scrapple."

Sweet and salty coming together.

Pat promises scrapple pie is where it's at.
