Music Mixes With Finance Lessons At Area School Concerts

FOLSOM, Pa. (CBS) - A Rock 'n' Roll nonprofit financial literacy concert series made stops at several schools across the area Thursday.

Gooding, the lead singer of a band of the same name, spoke to students about financial literacy at Ridley High School:

"76-percent of us live paycheck to paycheck, three-fourths of divorces result directly from financial stress."

Gooding explains the charitable program teamed up with the Raymond James Financial Planning Team to mix music with a discussion about finances:

"I think it's very Rock 'n Roll to have some freedom to do what you want to do and not be in debt, not be worried all the time and so for me, music makes the medicine go down because you'll find because we play rock 'n roll, we're very lucky, we have a mic, I figured, people listen to us, maybe we can talk about some things that matter."

He says playing Rock 'n' Roll helps get the kids' attention:

"I mean, we've toured all over, done a lot of music for film and TV but we started a charity because we thought if students knew this, it could make a big difference in their lives."

Assistant principal Jamie Pena says programs like this send an important message to the students:

"Well it stressed to the students that financial literacy, although they don't get tested in it in school, they're gonna get tested in it in the real world."
