Man Who Shot Wilmington Cop In The Face Gets Life In Prison

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) -- A judge has sentenced a man to life in prison for shooting a Wilmington police officer in the face during a traffic stop.

Superior Court Judge Calvin Scott on Friday sentenced 22-year-old Frederick Gray to life in prison, plus 52 years. A jury convicted Gray of attempted murder in January.

According to testimony in the case, Patrolman Justin Wilkers and his partner pursued an SUV that failed to stop when they tried to pull it over for faulty tail lights. When it did stop, two people fled, and Wilkers testified he expected Gray to flee too, but instead Gray faced him with a handgun and fired, striking Wilkers in the face.

Wilkers lost hearing in one ear and he cannot close one eye.
