Local African-American Leaders Take Active Roll In Clinton Campaign

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Dozens of local African-American Democrats have signed on to a new effort within the Hillary Clinton campaign. They've joined a "leadership council" to get out the vote in November.

Councilwoman Cindy Bass is among the more than 70 people, including many of her colleagues in city government, state officials and former local officials,  comprising 'Pennsylvania African-Americans for Hillary.'

"I'm just here to be helpful to the campaign," Bass said, "so in any way shape or form that they need me I intend to be helpful.

Among the assets members such as Bass bring is the ground organization that got them elected.

"We're not recreating the wheel here. We know what we have to do," she said. "We have to get out, knock on doors, talk to voters do voter registration."

Bass says turnout will be crucial for winning Pennsylvania. For Clinton, that's locally and in Pittsburgh where she leads in polls; for Donald Trump in more rural areas, where he's ahead, though his campaign has not indicated a plan to get out the vote in those places.
