2016 Gets A Little Longer, Leap Second Being Added Just Before 2017

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A lot of people are waiting for 2016 to come to an end.

Hold on a second...literally.

The people in charge of keeping track of time are actually adding a leap second, just before midnight on New Year's Eve.

Why you ask? Well, the extra second is needed to make up for time lost due to the Earth's slowing rotation.

This will mark the 27th time that a leap second since 1972.
