PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Covering the Philadelphia Phillies got more interesting on that overcast April evening in 1978.

17,000 fans were in the stands when eyes popped and jaws dropped. On the field in very unconventional form was a green glob of carnival feathers, a half-shot tail, beer belly, wide eyes and a long snout with a quick flick tongue and a round dome topped by a Phils cap, worn askew.

You got it. The Phillie Phanatic was launched to a dumbfounded crowd. And life hasn't been the same for school kids in classrooms, at charity events and city celebrations.

The original Phanatic - David Raymond began making the rounds and also became the most beloved figure in Phillie sports.
