KYW Flashback: Katz Crash Findings

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Just 1 year ago, it became clear in Philadelphia that even the most powerful and prominent people cannot be protected from errors of judgment.

In searching for answers about the death of Inquirer co-owner, Lewis Katz and six others in a May plane crash, Gulfstream, the aircraft manufacturer concluded that a pilot oversight had allowed the aircraft to reach a high rate of speed while it was unable to take off.

It hurtled off the end of a Massachusetts runway. The death of Katz, a popular political figure raised concern for the future of the Inquirer and Daily News. Katz and Gerry Lenfest had just won a bitterly disputed auction for ownership of the two financially troubled papers.
