Kimmo Timonen On Potential Comeback: 'Pretty Excited About What Might Come'

By Andrew Porter

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- Kimmo Timonen is one of the most beloved athletes in Philadelphia.

Timonen, 39, has been the Flyers' most consistent defenseman over his last seven seasons with the team. However, in September, Timonen was tragically diagnosed with blood clots in his calf and lungs, threatening his career.

Still, the courageous Timonen, who has yet to play this season, isn't hanging up his skates just yet.

"We still may be four, four weeks away until my medicine runs out," Timonen told Angelo Cataldi and the 94WIP Morning Show on Friday morning. "Until that time, we've got to do some re-testing probably in a couple weeks to see where I'm at and we go from there. But so far, everything looks good. I'm in good shape and I'm pretty excited about what might come in four weeks, but we don't know. We haven't done any testing, so you know, it's not about me it's about the health and what the picture will show."

Listen to Kimmo Timonen on the 94WIP Morning Show:

Timonen says taking medicine while playing, not blocking shots, will be the biggest obstacle for his return.

"I think that's going to be the issue, how I can play hockey and still probably take some kind of medicine for preventing the blood clot to form," Timonen said. "So, it's going to be a lot of talking the next few weeks and making sure if we can find a way which is safe for me to play. If not, we all know what's the story there."
