NEW YORK, N.Y. (CBS) -- After 100 years, you can finally sit down to devour a bagel and lox from the most famous appetizing store in New York.
Russ and Daughters on the Lower East Side (mentioned in an earlier Getaway) was launched from a herring barrel and has been around for a hundred years. But there was a problem. The place where New Yorkers flock for bagels and lox, smoked whitefish and sturgeon, pickled herring , pickles and chopped liver had no place to sit down. Two benches outside wouldn't do. You had to schlep the delicacies home, to your hotel or a nearby park, and eat.
A few weeks ago, they finally opened a cafe about a block from the original location on Orchard Street, once crammed with pushcarts. It's only a block from the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, which traces an immigrant history that includes Joel Russ and his daughters.
Light and airy, the cafe offers all the smoked fish found in the appetizing shop, plus unique takes on the traditional egg cream, cherry and cream sodas. Try it. You'll like it.
