Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Ready For Springtime Crabbing?

By Jay Lloyd

CHESTERTOWN, Md. (CBS) --  It's been a while since we heard the cracking sound of Maryland blue crabs.  But crabbing season has begun on the waters of the nearby Chesapeake Bay!

So, grab your crabbing gear, check out the regulations at the Maryland Department of Natural Resources web site, and make a weekend of it, you "chicken-neckers"!  (That's what Marylanders have been calling weekend crabbers for ages.)

Before he passed on, legendary Chesapeake waterman Cope Hubbard (photo below) told me it was a learning moment for the longtime locals:

"We turned into chicken-neckers ourselves, because that's the best bait you can use on a trot-line," he admitted.

You won't find Maryland crabs at the dockside eateries yet, but with any luck and enough chicken necks you might just land a dozen or two for your own table.
