PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Popular photo and video sharing app Instagram is launching a new standalone app for short looping videos.

Instagram's new app, Boomerang, allows users create looping videos that are just one second long.

Boomerang takes a burst of photos and stitches them together into a high-quality mini video that plays forward and backward.

The videos are automatically saved to your camera roll, but can be shared on Facebook, Instagram, or elsewhere. The app doesn't require and Instagram account and you don't even have to log in.

The app is available now for iOS and Android devices.

Boomerang works similar to Phhhoto, a free app that also allows users to create gif-like videos. Phhhoto used Instagram's API for a "find friends" feature, but Instagram cut off access in April.
