Head Of Philadelphia Pastors Network Encourages Spiritual Leaders To Speak Out On Controversial Issues

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- On this Labor Day holiday, the head of the Philadelphia based American Pastors Network is troubled by a trend - Pastors unwilling to speak out on controversial issues from the pulpit.
Sam Rohrer is president of a network of pastors acting as resources for those who believe in the authority of the Bible and what he calls a Biblical world view on matters of public policy.
Rohrer says a recent study found while a majority of pastors surveyed believe the Bible has a lot to say about contemporary political and societal issues, fewer than 10 percent are willing to take on those issues from the pulpit.
"They prefer to have their people feel comfortable and to leave smiling than perhaps challenge them with truth. That is the primary reason why pastors in the pulpit just for fear don't address the issues that we would say are controversial."
Rohrer says too many pastors are more concerned about the size of their buildings and church bank accounts rather than saving souls.
