Giordano: Run Rand, Run

By Dom Giordano

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Senator Rand Paul joins Senator Ted Cruz tomorrow and announces his run for president. I'm really excited about this announcement for several reasons.

I love Rand Paul's mind and the manner in which he addresses the issues. I've had the chance to spend an hour talking with him in his office and I've interviewed him ten times. He is someone who is a thinker not just a talking points guy.

The second reason I'm excited by his announcement is that he has been a champion of outreach among groups that Republicans have somewhat ignored and historically have not done well with. The principal group I'm most interested in seeing how well he does with are younger voters.

Paul's outreach with younger voters hit a milestone with his filibuster on drones, NSA , and other privacy violators. This is a group that I think Republicans can reach better than Latinos, African-Americans or women.

I'm also interested in how well Paul and his team can use social media and technology to reach voters , raise money and rival what the Obama campaign did in 2012. They are telling me they are ready to score on this front.

Finally, Senator Paul has been second to none in opening lines of attack against Hillary Clinton. He would present quite a contract to her old school politics.

Let the games begin.
