Fundraising Effort Revving Up To Replace Aging Philadelphia Highway Patrol Motorcycles

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A fundraising effort is revving up to replace 14 of the 45 Philadelphia Highway Patrol motorcycles.

The Adopt a Police Motorcycle fundraiser is off to a good start. The nonprofit Philadelphia Police Foundation or PPF has raised enough money to purchase two Harley Davidson bikes. Twelve more are needed to be replaced aging Philadelphia Highway Patrol motorcycles, some of which are more than 20 years old.

Maureen Rush, Board President of the PPF, says donations are need immediately so the police motorcycles can be outfitted in time for the papal visit.

"There are corporations out there that $18,000 is a rather small donation," Rush says. "There are other people who want to be a part of the papal visit and want to be part of supporting the Philadelphia police, and it may be that they can only donate $5 or $10, but we have a lot of citizens. We can get there and we can get there in the next week or two."

Brian's Harley Davidson of Langhorne is assisting in the effort by offering the motorcycles at the at cost price of $18,000.
