Eating Certain Foods Can Help You Save Money And Improve Your Health

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Eating healthy is always important, but it takes on added significance when you're sick or battling a serious illness.

Eating fresh fruits and vegetables that are in season can save you money and improve your health, according to Jen Koffs, a clinical oncology dietitian with Cancer Treatment Centers of America.

"Food that very deep in color, like berries are full of anti-oxidants that can help fight diseases and vegetables that are deep orange, such as sweet potatoes and carrots or deep leafy greens, like kale, collard greens and spinach are packed full of nutrients that help prevent a number of diseases."

Foods high in anti-oxidants can help the body eliminate the drugs and chemicals used to treat many diseases. She urges patients to avoid processed foods, because they just add more chemicals to an already stressed body.
