Doctors And Nurses Need Patients' Help In Order To Make Them Better

By Lynne Adkins

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The push is on to encourage patients to take an active role in their care.

Your medical team should include more than your doctors and nurses; you are a key component according to Janette Bisbee, Education Project Manager at the Pennsylvania Hospital Engagement Network.

"When patients are involved in their own healthcare that the quality of that care improves and they get better results. There are fewer unhealthy behaviors, there's greater compliance with treatment and increased satisfaction."

She says patients should take a list of medications they take a brief health history and a list of questions they want answered.

It's helpful to take a friend, because two sets of ears are better than one.
