Democrats Attack Corbett For Transportation Funding Plan

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) - Pennsylvania's Democratic Party is attacking Governor Corbett for his efforts to enact a transportation funding bill supported by many Democrats, including former Governor Ed Rendell.

Attempting to make hay with new driving and vehicle fees resulting from the transportation funding plan now taking effect, the state Democratic chairman released a statement accusing Governor Corbett of breaking a pledge not to raise taxes, calling the new fees a "bad April Fools joke". The transportation plan was supported by many Democrats, including former Governor Ed Rendell, who says it's fair for the state Democratic chairman to point out that Corbett broke a pledge.

"Fair game to note that he made pledge that was the central part of his campaign and he violated it. But you should also say at the same time, that it was something that was supported by Democrats, not only me."

Rendell believes it was "stupid" for Governor Corbett to have boxed himself in by taking a no tax hike pledge but says Corbett's support of the transportation funding plan was the right thing to do.
